The Project

The Comport project has been designed to compare and contrast different approaches to the use of mobile and other technologies for supporting HE programmes which include substantial WBL (work-based learning) elements. The intial development of the project was undertaken by four north eastern F.E. Colleges - Gateshead, City of Sunderland, South Tyneside and Tyne Metropolitan - who each identified different target audiences and technology options with which to put together personal support systems for the work-based elements of their HE programmes.

The consortium colleges will pilot existing technologies with new approaches, focusing on personalised learning and in particular e-portfolios and PDPs. Each strand of the project, one in each of the partner colleges, will look at particular aspects and implementations of e-portfolios/PDPs.

A distinctive and critical feature of this project is that whilst each partner will use different approaches and technologies, a framework of metrics, designed at the outset and refined through the life of the project, will be used to ensure that a consistent and accurate comparative analysis is available to report on the sub-projects

Addendum (December 2007): As Tyne Metropolitan College is unable to proceed to practical implementation of the project the other active partners will jointly develop an additonal research strand which explores more informal, studen-driven uses of networking technologies. The intention will be to provide an additional dimension of comparison with the more formalised approaches of the main project.
